Hydrophobic coatings are loved for their dramatic beading effect. Water forms tight droplets that glide off the surface, creating a glossy look that is instantly eye catching.
But there is a trade off. Every droplet carries dust and minerals, and when the sun dries them out, they can leave behind visible water spots. This issue becomes even more noticeable in climates with heavy, dirty, or acid rain, where droplets trap more contaminants that will stain once the water evaporates.
A common misconception is that hydrophobic coatings are always easier to maintain. While it is true that dirt and light dust are less likely to stick to a freshly washed hydrophobic surface, the water beading also increases the risk of spotting when rainwater or wash water evaporates. Hydrophilic coatings behave differently. Instead of forming beads, water spreads evenly into a smooth sheet.
